The Rocky Mountain Challenge (RMC) is Eagle Lake’s ultimate adventure, designed to push campers to their physical, mental, social, and spiritual limits. Through high-intensity activities and deep Scripture-based discussions, campers build courage, leadership, trust, and decision-making skills, all while experiencing life-changing growth in the majestic Rocky Mountains. Because of the demanding nature of this program, RMC includes an application and approval process to ensure campers are prepared and ready to take on the challenge.

History of RMC
Since its beginning, RMC has been Eagle Lake’s most extreme and life-changing adventure program. Campers are pushed beyond their limits as they grow physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually, learning courage, leadership, trust, and decision-making through initiatives, Scripture, and deep discussions. This is not an easy program, but every camper who commits to giving their all completes it. RMC is for those ready for transformation, not just a “fun two weeks.”
What is RMC All About?
RMC is designed for young adults ready to take deeper ownership of their faith and lives. Through unconventional wilderness challenges, campers face their perceived limitations, learn to rely on peers, and practice listening to the Holy Spirit in moments of frustration. These shared experiences provide real-life lessons in perseverance and equip campers with trust in God and skills for life beyond camp.
God’s Design for Stressful Experiences
James 1:2–4 reminds us that trials produce endurance and maturity. Stress is one of God’s tools for growth, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually, just as Jesus Himself grew in these areas (Luke 2:52). On RMC, campers encounter obstacles that stretch them differently: some physically, some emotionally, but all in ways that build character, dependence on God, and interdependence with others.
Why Challenging Wilderness Camping?
The wilderness provides powerful opportunities for growth. In an environment free from distractions, campers become more aware of themselves, others, and God. Through Scripture application, group discussion, and personal reflection, values are tested and faith becomes practical. These challenges lead to tangible growth and lasting transformation.
Program Details
Because of the program’s difficulty, pre-approval from Eagle Lake’s Overnight Director is required before registration. Campers should be in good physical condition, as RMC takes place at over 9,000 feet of elevation. Highly trained staff facilitate the journey, though many program details remain undisclosed to preserve the “unknown” element that mirrors trusting God with life’s uncertainties.
Possible program elements include:
- Strenuous hiking and carrying heavy loads
- Navigating tight, confined spaces
- Operating at unconventional hours
- Fasting
- Relying on the group when counselors step back into facilitation roles
